Albums I Really Love!
My Days of 58 by Bill Callahan
This album served as my introduction to Bill Callahan and what an introduction it was. For me, this album was delicate, introspective and with a thin and dry wit that makes me cackle in my car.
My standout song was easily 'Stepping Out For Air' which listens as a sensory take on depression and which makes me feel like I can reach out and feel those Zoloft pines.
Empathy is also an exceptional song that makes me cry on command, every fucking time.
Ali by Vieux Farka Toure
The Hendrix of the Sahara is a moniker I never expected to come across, but my god is it justified. Vieux Farka Toure's homage to his father; and one of the greats of Malian and African music; Ali Farka Toure is simply one of the most joyful, funky and warming pieces of music I have ever come across. I just hope I will never stop replaying the start of 'Lobbo' as it playfully syncopates into life.
This is not an album I can perceive through the meaning or tact of its words, but through the warmth and depth of its love and spirit, you will find something that transports you to the dunes of Mali.
On The Lips by Molly Lewis
In my years both studying and practicing acoustics and sound design, I would say it is not common to find a sound that stops me in my tracks; let alone makes me drop to my knees in disbelief. Molly Lewis's whistling is what I believe *insert generic religous afterlife here* feels like, and if it isn't, then I don't know what I want.
'Cocosette' is the standout for me on this album, with slow and silky tones, enchanting percussion and a feeling of levity that makes the air feel like helium.
